Cold calling isn’t dead, it’s just misunderstood…

Let me be clear from the start, I love the phone, the phone was, is and will always be my best work friend.

Although I think that says more about me than it does anything else.

The problem is that I think ‘cold calling’ is the name lumped onto a whole host of techniques and as such needs a new definition, so being the kind gent that I am, I’ve come up with a new name.

Drum roll…

Direct calling.

You’re welcome.

The main difference for me is that cold calling is one of those automated, list led, scripted, impersonal, generic and sometimes bot-controlled things that generally starts with:

“hello, is that … speaking”

A direct call is where you’ve qualified your prospect (sector, relationship, industry etc.) and are calling them direct for the first time to introduce your product that you know can alleviate the problem you know they have after completing your research on both them and your product’s ability to help.

So, there you have it.

I’ve created a new name for something that means it won’t ever die, be replaced by AI, those pesky Millennials (said whilst rolling eyes and tutting), that creature under my stairs or some other form of disruption yet to be created and sold by people currently hawking bitcoin consultancy as GDPR was so last year.

You can thank me by commenting how helpful I’ve been to you, or something like that…

Salary brackets on adverts say more than you think

The fastest way to lose a great candidate? Write “competitive salary” on the job advert.   Because for some reason, plenty of employers still think it’s acceptable to write “competitive salary” or “DOE” (depending on experience) and expect people to jump through...

Where will the leaders of tomorrow come from?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently. as in the conversations I keep having behind the scenes, owners are nervous. Everyone’s talking about AI. About remote working. About efficiency, automation, scale., and they’re right to. None of that is going away, and...
