What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…

“Lean on me” (Bill Withers)

“Put a little love in your heart” (Jackie Deshannon)

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle” (Ian Maclaren)

These are just some of the things floating around my head since we received some awful news on 28th December 2017 and I make no apologies for sharing on here.

LinkedIn is a professional networking site, and my business leans heavily on my credibility and personality hence, you are my network, my support function and hell, some of you are even my friends.

WARNING – stop reading if you don’t like personal sharing or you’re one of those ‘this is not Facebook’ kind of people.

After receiving the news, my first thoughts were, ‘why us?’, ‘it’s not fair’, ‘what did we do wrong and what do we do now?’

I was in a funk and became irritable at everybody I met in the street, in a shop or anywhere. I imagined they were all being deliberately obstructive and just didn’t understand how bad I was feeling, and this, in turn, made me angry at the world and all those in it.

I quickly realised what happened was not actually the end of the world (even though it did and still feels like it) and to move forward I needed to take stock.

I have a wonderful wife, an amazing son (3 years old), a close-knit family unit, a great group of friends and a fledgeling business that allows me the flexibility to spend time with all of them

It got me thinking about how we all assume our lives are the most important thing in the universe and other people are just that, other people.

This can manifest itself in work or in play and although I’m not advocating we all start skipping and whistling all day and stop looking after ourselves, what I’m hoping for is the lessons I’ve learnt to stop before I act, listen before I speak, and also to understand we’re all equal no matter what our background can be of use to you.

This isn’t a cry for help or attention, it’s a cry for hope in a world that seems hell-bent on destroying itself online and offline, through the media, social platforms and on the streets.

We can all play our part in making the world a better place, and it all starts with you as that is the one thing you can control, your actions and your approach.

Next time you’re about to jump online and troll someone for having a different view to you or you’re in your car steaming up because that person in front is just a moron, count to 5 and remember that you don’t know what’s going on in that person’s life and vice-versa so it’s not personal.

Life’s far too short to sweat the small stuff!

Thanks for reading, I’ve found this cathartic and although I won’t forget what’s happened, I will move forward and endeavour to do my bit, maybe I’ll do less rec2rec or contingency recruiter bashing for a start.

Let us go forward together (Winston Churchill)

“Fake it till you make it” is also a really bad piece of advice. And yet, it keeps popping up, often backed by social media influencers or regurgitated motivational sound bites from people like Simon Sinek or Richard Branson. It’s a lovely little phrase to slap on a...

Would you work a weekend to get a four-day week?

The pandemic reshaped how we work, live, and prioritize our time. It forced many of us to reconsider what truly matters: not just how much we are paid, but the quality of life, flexibility, and overall work-life balance we can achieve.   The transition from fully...
