Job boards are the best & worst thing to happen to the recruitment sector.

Best as it’s a great way to initially source candidates

Worst, as people think attracting candidates is recruitment, so won’t use an agency as they can do it themselves.

I’ve wired a plug (I know, ark at me), yet I wouldn’t rewire a house.

It’s the right analogy, as people think, because they can ask questions in a meeting room, they can recruit & invest tens of thousands of pounds of their company’s money into the most volatile & reactionary commodity that company has (people are a nightmare, you know it & I know it).

I blame Indeed & Reed.

Their slick marketing bombards us every day with stories of how many candidates are just waiting to be hired, filter questions doing the job of actual professionals & all whilst you carry on with your day job, simples eh?

It can’t be a cost thing (which is what’s thrown at recruiters usually), as yes you might only pay a few hundred quid for an advert, but apart from the sunk cost of admin, interviews etc. there’s also the cost of mistakes based on topline analysis which is the cost of a salary when they leave, & trust me, no recruiter charges that much.

As a side note, if these websites really believed in what they did, do you wonder why they don’t promote retention figures, just the number of candidates on their database.

Don’t tell me they couldn’t track this, it’s just they don’t want to as they’re not interested in you long term as they think recruitment is filling a vacancy ASAP for the cheapest price.

Recruitment isn’t hard, it’s just hard work with no shortcuts to doing it properly.
